So, off the bat, I feel like I skimmed through this more than the other books. I skimmed even quicker when the climax of the book appeared about 100 pages earlier than I expected.
I think there is the sense of completion that I was chasing, but also, as the web of characters grew, the narrative leaned more towards the armies and less to Frodo and Sam, I lost a little interest. The Frodo, Sam, Gollum dynamic was the most compelling to me.
The final chapters after the destruction of the Ring were a surprise, and I have come to learn have been described as the most anti-climactic ever, which I can sympathise with.
Anyway, I think the climax was done wonderfully and was certainly the most engaged I had been throughout this book series, but it also highlighted how I skimmed much of this. Whether it is an issue of my own pacing or interest I am not sure, but I am glad that I am done and that I can finally watch the movies.
