Meanjin, Winter 2025, by various authors (2025)

I’ve read a couple of these now and generally enjoy Meanjin for the variety and introductions to new concepts, writing styles and authors I generally wouldn’t be exposed to. I also enjoy the biographies of the authors which captures a good snapshot of the literary community in Australia. I generally struggle with the short stories in Meanjin which drag on a little and can be a little inaccessible due to their use of high concept narrative devices or worse, simply boring topics however I enjoy the poetry (although I rarely understand it). I also find the topical stuff much easier to get into as it tends to cover interesting concepts and is written by subject matter experts. So save from reviewing the whole journal here’s some thoughts on a few pieces I read.

Big Incel Energy, by Claire G Coleman

Got to the party early and beat Louis Theroux. Not particularly interesting as a man on the internet who has already seen a lot of this stuff.

Ouyang Yu Interview

Interesting but felt a little narrow as someone who (kinda) already speaks two languages. Probably would mean more if I knew his work.

Safeguarding Australian History

Loved it. Great insight into Chinese Australian history and its politicalisation.

The Oracle

My eyes glazed over. I had a vision of somewhere else. Of doing something else. Anything else except for reading this again.
