Burnout to Brilliant: A practical guide to recharging, resetting and redesigning your life, by Dr Marny Lishman (2023)

Burnout to Brilliant is a light and fluffy pop-science book I enjoyed reading. Here, Dr Marny Lishman attacks the topic of Burnout in two parts, firstly describing what burnout is and secondly explaining what to do about it. It’s punchy, digestible and likely what people experiencing burnout actually need.

There are a lot of short chapters here typically comprising a personal story, a short message and worksheet. Many of these chapters are padded out with generous spacing and often heavy focuses on the personal stories of Dr Lishman, which are presented in plain and simple English.

Often the key content of the chapters are quite simple – sleep more, be thankful etc. However, this simplistic and clear approach is likely exactly what people suffering from burnout need. Unlike Stolen Focus which explores the why of topics leading to (burnout adjacent) focus issues, Burnout to Brilliant is less focused on the why and more focused on the do!

The book in someway is the Barefoot Investor guide to burnout, breaking things down really simply and in almost chronological steps. The personal stories work well to connect with the content and help readers identify their own issues and the book itself can read really quickly and easily.

However, for a book that can be read so quickly I think this book works best read slowly and following its steps. It’s a potentially overly simplistic guide, but it provides assurances for what we already know and is a good starting point for those who need help getting back on their feet.
