The tradies in their fluro
Dot the city streets
Amongst the suits and parkas
They find something to eat
There aren't as many smokos
They vape throughout the day
Their breaks are now far fewer
And they have much less to say
The suits meet them at midday
For poke bowls and banh mis
But they're quick back up the lifts
They will not savor these
They'll eat back at their desks
Maybe scan the AFR
They might even read their emails
But lunch time efforts won't go far
Nearby round the corner
Back down on the streets
Mostly students wander
and line up for viral treats
They saw photos on their feeds
Of new obscure foods
Everyone else has tried them
What else are they to do?
I've lost count of my walks
I've lost count of the faces
But I feel attuned
to lunch time patterns in these places
I turn back to go to work
I've now run out of time
I've seen many city lunch breaks
And made the most of mine

Lunch Break in the City
