Multicultural communities and their stories are typically under-represented in the Australian media. Despite cultural and financial barriers though, many notable works have been produced which speak to the experiences of multicultural communities. Below is a list of notable media productions that offer unique insights into the Greek-Australian identity. The productions selected feature Greek-Australian experiences at the heart of the stories they tell, rather than simply featuring Greek characters, actors or producers.
The intention of this list is to highlight cross-over productions that bring Greek-Australian stories to mainstream audiences, as such one should be aware of a number of considerations. Firstly, only feature films have been selected. Although many short films exist regarding the Greek-Australian experience they do not have the same mainstream cut-through. For similar reasons the television productions listed represent mainstream prime time productions, particularly narrative productions.
It is worth noting that Greek Australians have been prominent independent producers of community television, however these productions usually exist to exclusively serve the Greek-Australian community rather than appeal more broadly, as such they have not been listed. It is also worth noting that although many Greek-Australian lifestyle programs have been produced (particularly travel and cooking shows, few offer unique insights into the Greek-Australian identity and many are simply interpretations of Greek culture from non-Greek presenters or producers. A few notable community and lifestyle programs are listed below however they do not represent an exhaustive list of these kinds of productions.
I hope you find value in the below index, and maybe even discover a new film or show to watch and enjoy!
